Google Cloud Data – So you’ve decided to move your business—good call! Now comes the problem of data transfer. What you need to know about transferring your data to Google and what tools are available. Many factors may trigger the need to transfer your data to Google, including data center migration, machine learning, content storage and delivery, and backup and archiving needs. When moving data between locations, reliability, predictability, scalability, security and manageability must be considered. Google offers four main migration solutions that meet these requirements for different use cases.

Google Data Transfer Options You can get your data to Google in one of four main ways: Storage Transfer Tools: These tools allow you to upload data directly from your computer to Google Storage. You’ll typically use this option for small transfers of up to a few TBs. These include the Google Console UI, the JSON API, and the GSUTIL command line interface. GSUTIL is an open source command line tool for scripted transfers from your shell. It also allows you to manage GCS buckets. It can operate in streaming mode to forward incremental copies and script output in rsync mode – for large multi-threaded/multi-processing data movements. Use it instead of the UNIX cp (copy) command, which is not multithreaded. Storage Transfer Service — This service allows you to quickly import data online from other s, from on-premises sources, or from one bucket to another within Google. You can set up recurring transfer tasks to save time and resources and can be scaled up to 10 Gbps. To automate the creation and management of transfer tasks, you can use the Storage Transfer API or client libraries in the language of your choice. Compared to GSUTIL, Storage Transfer Service is a structured solution that handles retries and provides detailed transfer registration. Data transfer is faster because data travels over high-bandwidth network lines. The on-premise transfer service reduces transfer time by taking advantage of the maximum available bandwidth and applying performance optimizations. Transfer Appliance: This is a great option if you want to transfer a large dataset and don’t have much bandwidth. Transfer Appliance enables seamless, secure and fast data transfer to Google. For example, a 1 PB data transfer can be completed in just 40 days with a transfer appliance, compared to the three years it takes to complete an online data transfer over a typical network (100 Mbps). The Transfer Appliance is a physical box that comes in two forms: TA40 (40TB) and TA300 (300TB). The process is simple. First you order the device through the console. Once it’s shipped to you, copy your data to the device (via file copy via NFS), where the data is encrypted and stored. Finally, you return the device to Google to transfer the data to your GCS bucket and the data will be erased from the device. The Transfer Appliance is very performant because it uses all solid-state drives, minimal software, and multiple network connectivity options. BigQuery Data Transfer Service: This option allows your analytics team to write a single line of code. Without BigQuery being the foundation of the data warehouse. It automates the movement of data into BigQuery on a scheduled, systematic basis. It supports Google SaaS apps, migration from third-party storage providers, as well as various third-party resources. and data warehouses such as Teradata and Amazon Redshift. Once that data arrives, you can use it directly in BigQuery for analytics, machine learning, or just warehousing. Conclusion Whatever your data transfer use case, it must be done quickly, reliably, securely and consistently.
