Data Storage On The Cloud – As an IT director or senior executive responsible for infrastructure and operations (I&O), managing costs while increasing value for the corporation are two top priorities. For many organizations, this is too much data with too much churn to manage cost-effectively. Cold data is managed and stored in the same way as if it were hot data. It resides on a primary file server optimized for performance, with higher operating costs and therefore always a more expensive storage configuration. Organizations must maintain various logs, records, reports and other data required by their regulators. Such regulatory or compliance data is often cold, dormant, and does not change over time. However, when regulatory authorities request this data, it must be readily available. Not having this data, or keeping it too long for retrieval, can cost companies significant losses due to non-compliance.
Historically, all old data (not necessarily just cold data) was archived; Special magnetic media refer to storage systems, optical disks, or magnetic tape systems. These were inexpensive methods of preserving data for longer periods of time. These systems were acceptable when the reasons for retaining old data were to meet traditional regulatory and data management requirements, and data recovery times were measured in days and weeks. For cold data corporations to realize their value, historical archive mechanisms are no longer acceptable. Data whose recovery time is measured in days and weeks is practically useless and effectively lost. Even these archival solutions are not the cheapest options for long-term storage and reliability. The new standard for the most economical, highest balance of reliability and availability of archives is cloud storage, whether private or public.

However, cloud storage alone does not fully meet the criteria for data value. For cold data to achieve its value, it must be useful. To be useful, it must be accessible and searchable.
