Cloud Software For Linux – We’ve reached a point where nearly every computer user relies on the cloud… as the only storage solution. What makes the cloud really important for users is when it is used as a backup. Why such a game changer? By backing up to the cloud, you have access to those files from any computer associated with your cloud account. And because it powers the cloud, many services provide tools.

Let’s take a look at five such tools. I’ll focus on GUI tools because they offer a much lower barrier to entry than most CLI tools. I also focus on various, consumer-grade cloud services (eg, Google Drive, Dropbox, Wasabi, and pCloud). I must admit, InSync has been my cloud backup option for a long time. Since Google refused to release a desktop client for Google Drive (and I rely on Google Drive every day), I had to resort to a third-party solution. Insync is called the solution. It’s not only seamless especially when syncing desktop to disk, but has been flawless since I started using the tool.

Insync costs $29.99 (per Google Account) for a one-time fee. Trust me when I say this tool is well worth the price of admission. With InSync you don’t just get a simple GUI to manage your Google Drive backup and sync, you get a tool (Figure 1) that gives you complete control over what’s backed up and how it’s backed up Is. Although this angered many in the Dropbox community (by dropping support for all filesystems but unencrypted ext4), it still supports most desktop deployments. In other words, if your distribution still uses the ext4 file system (and you don’t choose to encrypt your entire drive), you should be good to go.

The good news is that the Dropbox desktop client is great. The tool provides a system tray icon that allows you to easily interact with your cloud sync. Dropbox also includes CLI tools and Nautilus integration (via an additional addon found here).

The Dropbox/Nautilus integration is an important part as it makes backing up to your cloud seamless and fast. From the Nautilus file manager, locate the folder as Badly Attached, right-click it, and select Dropbox > Move to Dropbox (Figure 4).

The only caveat to the Dropbox/Nautilus integration is that the only option is to move the folder to Dropbox. For some this may not be an option. It would be nice for the developers of this package to make the action create a link instead (instead of actually moving the folder).

Outside of that one issue, the Dropbox cloud sync/backup solution is a great way to go.

PCloud might be one of the best cloud backup solutions you’ve never heard of. Features of cloud storage/backup are:

The pCloud desktop client is very user friendly. After installing, you have access to your account information (Figure 5), the ability to create sync pairs, create shares, enable crypto (which requires an additional subscription), and general settings.

One caveat to pCloud is that there is no file manager integration. This is overridden by the sync folder in the pCloud client.

Cloudberry’s primary focus is for managed service providers. The business side of CloudBerry has an associated price (which may be out of price range for the average user looking for a simple cloud backup solution). However, for home use, Cloudberry is free.

What makes CloudBerry different from other tools is that it is not a backup/storage solution. Instead, CloudBerry acts as a link between your desktop and something like this:

In other words, you use CloudBerry as the interface between the files/folders you want to share and the destination you want to send them to. This also means that you must have an account with one of the many supported solutions.

After you install CloudBerry, you create a new backup plan for the target storage solution. For that configuration, you need information like:

One caveat to CloudBerry is that it does not integrate with a file manager or have a system tray icon for interacting with the service.

Duplicati is another option that allows you to sync your local directories to locally attached drives, network attached storage or with multiple cloud services. Supported options include:

After you install Duplicati (download the installer for Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, or RedHat from the Duplicati download page), click the entry on your desktop menu, which will open the web page for the tool (Figure 7), App Settings Configure, create a new backup, restore from backup, and more.

To create a backup, click Add Backup and view the easy-to-use wizard (Figure 8). The backup service you choose determines what you need for a successful configuration.

For example, to back up to Google Drive, you’ll need an AuthID. For that, click on the AuthID link in the Destination section of the setup, where you need to select the Google account to associate with the backup. Once you have allowed duplicate access to the account, the AuthID will be populated and you are ready to proceed. Click on Test Connection and you will be asked to correct the creation of a new folder (if necessary). Click Next to complete the setup of the backup.

These five cloud backup tools are not the end of this particular rainbow. There are many more options (including CLI-only tools) for where these come from. But any of these backup clients will do a decent job of serving your desktop-to-cloud backup needs.
