SRE (Site Reliability Engineering) was originally developed by Google to maintain service reliability and reduce human-detectable disruptions to desired Service-Level Objectives (SLOs). This plays an important role for cloud services in terms of reliability and availability.

Cloud Pak for Data, being an on-premises platform, does not need SRE to maintain the reliability of the “site” itself. However, as a cloud-based offering, Cloud Pak for Data must provide customers with platform-level reliability for all integrated services.

For example, suppose a customer plans to run Cloud Pak for Data with Watson Studio, Watson Knowledge Catalog, Watson Machine Learning, Watson OpenScale, Data Virtualization, DataStage, and Db2 as shown in the image below. How to make all these services work harmoniously and reliably is a challenge.

Availability is a measure that describes the percentage of time a service is available. This is also called the “uptime” of the service. A good accessibility measure should:

Step 1: The team started creating probes using the Streams service API, such as startInstance, submitJob, cancelJob, stopInstance, etc. This type of probe is very close to the end-user experience, but lightweight.

Step 2: The team starts running the probe at a certain interval – every 30 seconds or a minute at first, and adjusts based on experience.

Step 4: Calculate Streams service availability equal to Total Uptime / (Total Uptime + Total Downtime). For example, if the probe runs at one-minute intervals and in a week two API calls fail, the availability is 99.98%. If we set the SLO availability to 99.95%, there should be no more than five failures in a week period.
