Digital business automation (DBA) enables organizations to improve operations by streamlining how people engage with business processes and workflows, automating repeatable decisions, and giving business users the ability to modify and change the business logic inherent in those business processes.

SRE (Site Reliability Engineering) was originally developed by Google to maintain service reliability and reduce human-detectable disruptions to desired Service-Level Objectives (SLOs). This plays an important role for cloud services in terms of reliability and availability.

Cloud Pak for Data, being an on-premises platform, does not need SRE to maintain the reliability of the “site” itself. However, as a cloud-based offering, Cloud Pak for Data must provide customers with platform-level reliability for all integrated services.

For example, suppose a customer plans to run Cloud Pak for Data with Watson Studio, Watson Knowledge Catalog, Watson Machine Learning, Watson OpenScale, Data Virtualization, DataStage, and Db2 as shown in the image below. How to make all these services work harmoniously and reliably is a challenge.

Cloud Paks Accelerate Your Way To The Cloud

Integrating SRE technology into the Cloud Pak for Data release pipeline can help overcome this challenge and achieve the following goals:

This blog describes (1) Cloud Pak architecture and framework for SRE Data, (2) SRE runtime environment, and (3) how it works.

SRE Analytics and Operations uses the Cloud Pak application for real data with Watson Studio, Watson Machine Learning and Streams services, as shown in the diagram below:

Cloud Pak For Data Installation

To simulate the customer environment, SRE Workload runs service test cases created based on customer scenarios, including the following:

Installing Ibm Cloud Pak For Data 3.5 On Red Hat Openshift Container Platform 4.6 On Ibm Power Systems Virtual Server

SRE’s Cloud Pak for Data team maintains three types of clusters – test, staging and production clusters, and deploys all Cloud Pak for Data services in these clusters. These include the services I mentioned at the beginning of this blog – Watson Studio, Watson Knowledge Catalog, Watson Machine Learning, Watson Open Scale, Data Virtualization, Data Stage and Db2 and more. These clusters run at different stages of the Cloud Pak for Data release pipeline:

Here I use an important metric – availability to show how Cloud Pak for Data SRE works.

Availability is a measure that describes the percentage of time a service is available. This is also called the “uptime” of the service. A good accessibility measure should:

First, the SRE team collects service pod statistics and calculates availability equal to uptime / (uptime + downtime).

Installing Ibm Cloud Pak For Integration On Openshift 4.3

The problem with this approach is that Cloud Pak for Data services are distributed and have replicas, so a service pod that goes down may not affect the end-user experience. This means that these metrics do not reflect availability to end users. The changes are not proportional to the accessibility that users feel.

Since pod statistics cannot reflect service availability, the SRE team began using service APIs to track service uptime.

Using IBM Streams as an example, here is how the SRE team calculates the availability of the Streams service:

Cloud Pak For Data Installation

Step 1: The team started creating probes using the Streams service API, such as startInstance, submitJob, cancelJob, stopInstance, etc. This type of probe is very close to the end-user experience, but lightweight.

Cloud Pak For Data

Step 2: The team starts running the probe at a certain interval – every 30 seconds or a minute at first, and adjusts based on experience.

Step 4: Calculate Streams service availability equal to Total Uptime / (Total Uptime + Total Downtime). For example, if the probe runs at one-minute intervals and in a week two API calls fail, the availability is 99.98%. If we set the SLO availability to 99.95%, there should be no more than five failures in a week period.

Cloud Pak for Data and Services supports monthly on-demand releases. Let’s continue using IBM Streams as an example to show how Cloud Pak for Data SRE works.

Assume that IBM Streams plans a monthly release in March 2021 with new features. The Stream team plans to (1) develop these features i
