However, the synchronization client software used in most cloud file systems is not designed as a backup client and does not have this capability. Consider the popular QuickBooks program. We’ve seen clients store corporate QBW data files in Dropbox or OneDrive only to have the data corrupted because the sync client doesn’t know how to handle locked files. Because most file versioning solutions create “versions” of files, when the file system remembers changes, you get a version of the file for each change. However, those changes need to be synced back to the cloud, and when that happens, the sync client doesn’t know how to write those changes back and forth in a way that doesn’t corrupt the files.

What happens to this “sync” client if you accidentally delete a large folder? Changes are automatically synced to the cloud, and if the folder is shared, those changes will be synced to all other devices set to sync the dataset. Since you have a version of this folder before it was deleted, you’d think restoring everything should be easy, right? Well, not enough. Note that this “sync” client is not designed to be smart and will therefore sync every change. So, while you can simply click a button and restore an accidentally deleted folder, you should pause the sync to avoid duplication or conflicts.
